Abstract Painting

Abstract Art in the Late Twentieth Century by Frances Colpitt,

Abstract Art in the Late Twentieth Century by Frances Colpitt,
These essays on abstract painting by eleven of its most incisive critics trace the development of such critical issues as hard-edge painting, deductive and serial structure, monochrome abstraction, the psychological analogy, regionalism, and the "death of painting" in Postmodernism. The introduction and commentary by Frances Colpitt situates the essays historically and examines their philosophical sources and influences, from formalism and phenomenology to structuralism and poststructuralism. What emerges is a coherent and optimistic picture of abstract painting--the definitive contribution of modern art.

"On the floor I am more at ease, I feel nearer, more a part of the painting, since this way I can walk around in it, work from the four sides and be literally 'in' the painting." -- Jackson Pollock, 1947 Jackson Pollock (1912 - 1956) was the commanding figure of American Abstract Expressionism. By the mid-1940s, he was painting in a completely abstract manner, and the "drip and splash" style for which he is best known emerged rather abruptly in 1947. This manner of Action Painting had in common with Surrealist theories of automatism that artists and critics alike supposed it to -result in a direct expression or revelation of the unconscious moods of the artist. Advanced critics strongly supported Pollock, but he was also subject to much abuse and sarcasm; in 1956, "Time "magazine called him "Jack the Dripper." By the 1960s, however, he was generally recognized as the most important figure in this century's most important movement in American painting. His unhappy personal life and his premature death in a car crash contributed to his legendary status. This catalogue book was first published on the occasion of a noted exhibition at the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Dusseldorf, Germany. It presents important paintings as well as graphic works from the New York Museum of Modern Art and from several European collections, for example, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart. Volkmar Essers is curator at the museum Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Dusseldorf. He specializes in and has published on Abstract Expressionism.

Abstract impressionism - Abstract impressionism arguably is a type of Abstract expressionism where brushstrokes are uniform and non-energetic to make a lyrical quality, similar to the brushstrokes of the Impressionists, where in the action painting style of Abstract expressionism brushes were often dispensed with and paint was applied non-uniformly and energetically.

Hard-edge painting - The hard-edge painting style can be considered a subdivision of Post-Painterly Abstraction, which in turn emerged from Color Field painting. The term was coined by writer, curator and Los Angeles Times art critic Jules Langsner in 1959 to describe the work of painters from California, who—in their reaction to the more painterly or gestural forms of Abstract Expressionism—adopted a knowingly impersonal paint application and delineated areas of color with particular sharpness and clarity.

Impulse and implication of Abstract Expressionism - One of the driving forces behind Abstract Expressionism was a desire to free painting from the hierarchy of subject/object relationship, so that meaning could be derived by the viewer through direct perception rather than relying upon reference to association or representation.

Painters Painting - Painters Painting: The New York Art Scene 1940-1970 is a 1972 documentary directed by Emile de Antonio. It covers American art movements from abstract expressionism to pop art through conversations with artists in their studios.
